Parents’ Guide to Arts Education in California Public Schools

WHAT IS THE PARENTS’ GUIDE TO ARTS EDUCATION IN CALIFORNIA PUBLIC SCHOOLS?

California State PTA and Create CA have teamed up to offer the Parents’ Guide to Arts Education in California Public Schools. This newly revised version of the VAPA Guide has been updated to include the areas of digital and media arts, based on the California Department of Education’s new guidance for arts standards in California. The guide provides an overview of what your child will learn in each arts discipline by the end of each grade level.

WHY SHOULD YOU READ THE NEWLY REVISED GUIDE?

The guide helps parents become better advocates for getting more arts instruction added to their child’s school, by showing you what your child will learn, how you can help with their learning, and what to ask your child’s teacher. By asking about the arts program at your child’s school, you are showing your interest in all students (not just the “talented”) having the opportunity to express their unique individuality through creating and learning in the arts. This guide can be used at your local PTA meeting, to express concerns to your school board, or to read with your child to understand how YOU can make the biggest impact on arts education in California. Learn more about how to use the guide by watching this informative webinar.
